Girls' Education and Rescue Centers – Mother Esther School – July 2022 Update

Kenya

Dear friends,

It has been a heartbreaking season in the life of the world, but we worship the God who has journeyed through the depth of pain and heartbreak for us. Each year at Easter, we celebrate the promise that through Jesus Christ, God brings hope out of despair, abundance out of scarcity, and new life out of death. At Mother Esther School, we have certainly witnessed new life emerge from situations of despair, and we have experienced joy — fierce and defiant — in the face of hopelessness.

When we began this school year, we did not know how things would go. Our girls returned to school in 2021 more than a year behind their peers in reading, mathematics, and every other subject. In April, our girls took Kenya's national primary school exam, alongside 8th graders across the country. The scores from this exam determine which high school a student qualifies to attend. Our girls did better than we could have imagined!

·         two of our students, Mercy and Florence, scored in the top 10% of students nationally

·         seven girls scored in the top 20% of students nationally

·         all 23 girls proceeded to high school in May

Every student from this pioneer class at Mother Esther will be the first girl in her family to attend high school. God, who is at work through Mother Esther School, has done more than we could have asked or even imagined.

We could not have reached this milestone — our very first class of 8th graders — without all of the love and support we receive from friends around the world. Asanteni sana.

May the light of God's love shine in your life always,

Lauren Scharstein, PCEA Deputy Director of Mission
