It is estimated that around 1 million Sudanese refugees live in Egypt. It’s not necessarily new; refugees have been coming from Sudan for decades because of the country’s civil war. Sudan eventually split into two countries, Sudan and South Sudan, but waves of refugees didn’t slow as hostilities continued. Today, ongoing violence continues to drive refugees into Egypt.

Many arrive in Egypt carrying little more than what they could take with them as they fled their homeland. They leave homes, livelihoods, communities, and even loved ones behind. But reaching safety does not mean the journey is over. In Egypt, they begin again as displaced people – navigating an unfamiliar country, rebuilding their lives, and finding their place in a land that is not their own.

In response, and extending its ministry beyond new church development, the Pastoral, Outreach, and Mission Council (POMC) of the Synod of the Nile has placed a special ministry focus on the growing number of Sudanese refugees living in Egypt.

In recent years, and due to regional hostilities, the number of refugees living in Egypt has dramatically increased. Countless Palestinians have arrived through the Rafah border crossing, coming with nothing but the clothes on their backs, fleeing the violence and uncertainty back home.

Taking Jesus’ words seriously in the Gospel of Matthew, the Pastoral, Outreach, and Mission Council (POMC) of the Synod of the Nile has risen to the occasion and responded quickly to the growing crisis. Our partner is doing so much more than developing new churches.

First founded for the purpose of providing programs for Syrian refugee children, the Compassion Community Centers continue to provide a safe place for children to learn and to grow.

Operated by Compassion Protestant Society (CPS), the diaconal arm of the National Evangelical Synod of Syria and Lebanon (NESSL), the Compassion Community Centers have long been providing programs each morning for Syrian refugee children. In the last year, in response to the rising need during the current regional crisis, the centers expanded their impact by launching a new afternoon program for Lebanese public-school students affected by conflict and educational disruption.

The staff and board at Tumaini Children’s Ministry have continued to provide loving care and support for vulnerable children in Kenya’s Central Highlands during a season of transition.

In 2022, Tumaini began re-integrating children with relatives or guardians in compliance with government mandates. As of August 2025, most children have successfully returned to family care. Tumaini continues to provide school fees and uniforms; food supplements for families; and regular visits from social workers and a chaplain to ensure children are thriving. University students from Tumaini also receive tuition assistance.

In a time of transition, Namumu Orphanage Center is an oasis of health and life in their community. God is moving, and children are learning, growing, and flourishing thanks to your faithfulness. The following is just a glimpse of this inspiring environment for families.
