PCEA Urisho Church Dedication
PCEA Urisho Church in Arusha, Tanzania, was dedicated in June with a happy celebration. The church is located on top of Mount Meru, just outside Arusha.
From our base in Kikuyu, it took all day to drive to Arusha for the dedication. We got to the border at noon, and it took about two hours to cross because of the paperwork for the vehicle. The main language of Tanzania is Swahili, and very few people speak English.
We needed a four-wheel drive vehicle to climb the 8,000 feet to the church. As we traveled up the mountain, we were greeted by children singing and carrying banners celebrating the opening of the church. At the top of the mountain, there is a beautiful view of Arusha.
It took many years and many people to build this beautiful church. The church started in a cow shed in 1994 with eight members. In 1996, they moved to a small church on the present plot of land. By 2014, they had grown to twenty members and began building the new church. They constructed the church up to the roof but then stalled. In 2019, they came to us for help. Together we decided that we would do the roof.
Things were dormant through COVID. In October 2022, we met again and divided up the remaining work to complete the church. We even set the dedication date at that meeting.
This is one of the largest churches that we have completed. They now have 200 + members, and that number will probably double by year’s end.
The Moderator of the General Assembly officiated the dedication service. After the service, three BBQ goats were served, which we enjoyed before heading back down the mountain.
The people of Urisho are truly appreciative of all that was done. It was a BIG Celebration!
