Ethiopia Partnership — West Gambella Bethel Synod Vehicle

Dear friends,

For several years, the West Gambella Bethel Synod President, Rev. James Gadet Tang, has requested help from donor partners to raise funds to replace their aging vehicle. Their vehicle was purchased in 2006 and has completed nearly 500,000 kilometers (more than 300,000 miles).

The synod has grown in membership and outreach considerably during the last 17 years. They now have more than 121,000 members in 160 congregations. The Toyota Land Cruiser has been used for outreach activities in hard-to-reach areas, for attending church meetings in Presbyteries and congregations, and occasionally as an ‘ambulance’ or to move pastors and their families. Partners have also benefitted from the use of the vehicle during visits when the synod collects them at the airport and transports them around the region.

Historically, the only place to service the vehicle was in Addis Ababa (nearly 800 kilometers away). Fortunately, there is now a small, local garage in Gambella that can maintain the vehicle when parts are available. Land Cruisers are very strong and reliable cars that meet the synod’s needs.

The Development Department of the synod has the possibility of procuring Land Cruisers duty-free. This will make it possible for the synod to have access to a vehicle when they need it. The cost of the vehicle for the Development Department will be approximately $60,000, as opposed to $135,000. Please consider supporting this effort to raise funds to replace their tired (and only) Synod vehicle.

Thank you,
