Holistic Evangelism in Tete Province — August 2023 Update

Dear Friends of Tete Province,

I am excited to share with you an update on our Holistic Evangelism Project in Tete Province, Mozambique. The year started with a bang. Cyclone Freddy made its first landfall in Mozambique in late February and then returned for a second landfall in March. Tete Province (an interior province) was spared the tremendous rainfall that coastal areas received, but crop preparation and planting were delayed, and village life was disrupted. We are grateful the damage and flooding were not as bad as we feared.

Project Director Sebber Banda and her children, Adam and Nancy, are well and doing fine. Sebber recently traveled to Lusaka, Zambia, for final exams related to her nursing recertification. She will be taking advantage of some more continuing education a little later this year. Adam has finished his bioengineering degree and Nancy has secured a scholarship for college courses in Australia. Carlos and his family are also well. Carlos stays busy with his responsibilities as a pastor, secondary school teacher, and Sebber's project assistant.

Sebber and Carlos are busy overseeing our 2023 projects. We are in the process of drilling 19 wells, building three schools and a teachers’ house, adding a women’s shelter, staff kitchen, and running water via an elevated tank (see photo) for the new health clinic in Madzimaera (the Mayo Clinic of Tete Province). We are also helping to complete some churches in neighboring Malawi. One of our challenges this year is dealing with rampant inflation. We make construction budgets and before we can purchase building supplies, the costs rise. Fortunately, some long-time supporters have given some gifts to help us with our rising material costs.

Our Lay Leadership Training is also well underway with heavy attendance. During the year, over 17 types of leadership training events will be offered. Sebber is very pleased with the feedback she receives from these lay leaders who gather at our Leadership Training Center for this vital training. Soon, Sebber will be working with the Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) who make such a difference in the lives of mothers and their babies in the rural areas of Tete Province, Mozambique. Here is a photo of Sebber with two of her experienced TBAs. This program is near and dear to the heart of Sebber. Her training as a public health nurse has been so instrumental to the success of the health components of our Holistic Evangelism Project. I praise God for the many ways He has used Sebber and Carlos to improve the lives of the rural villagers in Tete Province and demonstrate the love of our Lord Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and honor. Please keep Sebber and Carlos and their families in your prayers.

I have also included a photo of the construction of a secondary school we are building in Zobue this year. Providing educational opportunities is another key aspect of our project.

Blessings!

Berry Long
