Namumu Orphanage Center - April 2021 Update

Siavonga, Zambia

The Outreach Foundation has been in partnership with Namumu Orphanage Center (NOC) for nearly 20 years. Located in the Kariba lakeshore area in the district of Siavonga, Zambia, Namumu has provided vulnerable children with food, clothing, shelter, and education to help them reach their potential. Children who have “graduated” from NOC have trained as pastors, teachers, and clinical officers, and many have returned to serve in the community where they grew up. In response to the health needs of the area, a clinic was built in 2005, with the help of The Outreach Foundation, to provide essential primary health care services to the children and the surrounding community.

Over time, it became clear that there was a need for more and better health and clinical services. So two years ago, in collaboration with the Government of Zambia, the clinic expanded services and increased staffing. Currently, there are two volunteer clinical officers, four nurses, an environmental officer, a psychosocial counselor, and several community health workers and clinic assistants. They provide a full range of primary services to the community and local businesses. And the community has, in turn, helped to provide for and maintain these services. For example, the nearby Kaliolio Crocodile Farm helped to improve the clinic’s water supply and contributed to the payment of electricity costs. Another local donor helped build a “sitting place” under a tree for maternal and child health services and health education sessions.

The NOC Coordinator, Mr. Siakwale Matomola, is a man of many talents and a passion for self-sustaining programs that benefit the community and the children under his care. He is knowledgeable, passionate, and a good communicator. He recently expressed his deep appreciation to The Outreach Foundation for the kind and generous support of the clinic expansion and the NOC programs.

Mr. Siakwale’s dream is to continue working at NOC while furthering his training for developing income-generating programs to make Namumu sustainable. He has been studying online toward a degree in agricultural development through the Natural Resources Development College in Lusaka. He has five semesters left of his four-year program. Classes are through a distance/online program and he attends one month of residential class in Lusaka each semester. $340 per semester covers all of his expenses (tuition, books, and residential fees). Zambia needs more young people trained in agricultural development and willing to get their hands dirty! Namumu currently has dairy cows and chickens, and they are planning to add fish farming in the future.

Thank you for your gifts that enable children from this area of Zambia to realize their dreams and help their communities. Pray for the staff and board of Namumu as they work with communities to strengthen families and address chronic poverty.
