Namumu Orphanage Center - September 2023 Update

ZAMBIA

The Namumu Orphanage Center is making great progress on their strategic plans:

1.       Finishing expansion of the medical clinic
2.      Raising funds and constructing a building and equipment for a hammer mill to generate income
3.      Working to build a better poultry house to generate income
4.      Exploring what it would take to become a Vocational Training Center. This is a key part of their strategic plan and will shift Namumu from a residential orphanage program to an educational training center. When we visited, they shared with us there are no Vocational Training Centers in their region.

Siakwale Matomola, Namumu Orphanage Center Director, shared how he completed the next level of his education which was funded by scholarships from The Outreach Foundation.

There is much to celebrate here!

Blessings,
Doug Hoglund, Outreach Trustee

We recently received the following news from Siakwale:

Generally, all is going well. The medical clinic, which is being refurbished with help from neighboring Kaliolio crocodile farm, is almost completed. It will be in operation before the end of this year.

Our application to the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) under the loan component for the hammer mill project was successful. This fund was used to construct a hammer mill house and purchase the hammer mill and electrical wiring materials to install power. The hammer mill has helped to reduce the challenges of feeding dairy cows and is also a good income-generating activity.

Siavonga Secondary School approached us after hearing that we now have a hammer mill to enter into a contract for milling mealie meal for their school. This will generate more income, but we lack a dehuller for the samples they requested.

Currently, we are working on building a new poultry building as the old one is in a deplorable state. It will be centrally located for security purposes and will also be near the source of power.

We have taken great steps towards our plans for the Vocational Skills Training Center. We reached out to TAVETA (Technical Education, Vocational, and Entrepreneurship Training Authority) for what is required, and they were able to provide all the necessary information. The requirements include completing lecture rooms, learning equipment, and lectures before TAVETA comes for inspection.

The Namumu board and management visited Chikupi Vocational Skills Training Center to learn from what they are doing. It was a fruitful visit.

Additional information will be shared later on building designs and budgeting. Thank you so much and God bless you for everything you are doing for us.

Blessings,

Siakwale
