Sureste Presbyterian Theological Seminary - March 2022 Update

Tabasco, Mexico

Deep in the lush tropical landscape of the Mexican Gulf state of Tabasco is the campus of Sureste Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Sureste, founded in 1985 and a long-time Outreach partner, is committed to equipping the next generation of pastors and servant leaders for the Presbyterian church in the southern states of Tabasco and Chiapas where the church is growing rapidly. Most students are studying to complete a bachelor’s degree in theology. Outreach partners provide partial scholarships for many of the students studying for this degree.

After two years of remote learning due to COVID, students joyfully returned to campus in January for the spring semester. Rector José Juan García Hernández reports that, by God’s grace, no cases of COVID have occurred to date. The benefits of face-to-face interaction between students and professors and times of fellowship can hardly be overstated.

In addition to training the next generation of pastors, Sureste is also the headquarters for Spanish language programming for Ministerio Reforma, a multi-media ministry that produces and airs Christian radio and TV content throughout Latin America (610 radio stations carry two of the ministry’s monthly programs). Sureste professors regularly develop content and present for the ministry. In March, Hebrew professor Juan Marcos León is presenting a daily devotional as part of the “Cada Dia” (Every Day) program.

There has been great progress made on the first phase of repairing fire damage to the men’s dormitory building. Through the generous donations of Outreach Foundation partners, Sureste has been able to complete the initial repair work which included cleaning the smoke-damaged rooms, re-wiring the electrical system, and installing a new HVAC system. With incremental funding, they will be able to continue with repairs, including replacing ceiling and floor tiles and repainting all 15 rooms in this two-story building.
