Weeping with Haiti: an Update

An Important Update on the Situation in Haiti

We recently received the following report from Haiti Outreach Ministries Executive Director Caroline Chambre Hammock :

As you know, Haiti has been deeply struggling over the past year with sociopolitical unrest, violence, and hyperinflation. Sadly, the situation has deteriorated even further over the past several weeks. The Varreux Terminal, which is the main entry point for fuel in Haiti has been blocked by gangs for more than 20 days, and the lack of access to fuel has paralyzed daily life and activities. Our Haitian colleagues report that the cost of living is currently four times more than it was a month ago, and many products, including food items, are not available. The fuel shortage has led to other crises, including a critical lack of access to clean drinking water and a potential cholera outbreak.

Our programs are impacted by this situation. The schools have not yet reopened for the 2022-23 academic year as it is just not safe to do so. The medical and dental clinic has been closed for two weeks as the roads were impassable due to blockades and violence, preventing staff from getting there.

There are bright spots. Our staff has remained safe, for which we give constant thanks, and the churches have been able to hold worship, rejoicing in being together.

Our commitment remains steadfast. We are focused on educating the communities about potable water and treatment practices, resuming clinic services, and getting students back in school as soon as safely possible.

Please continue to pray with us for our Haitian brothers and sisters, for the continued safety and well-being of our staff, and for peace to return to Haiti. As we deal with the challenges of increased costs, a donation in any amount will provide relief. Thank you for your support.

In hope,

Caroline Chambre Hammock
Executive Director
