Stranded At Sea – Anchored in the Word
Since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to increasing hostilities in the Middle East, media outlets have featured stories of tankers set ablaze, supply chain disruptions, and skyrocketing oil prices. Those are real stories with real consequences for individuals, families, and businesses around the world.
But they aren’t the only stories that need to be told.
Because the ships aren’t ghost ships. Each vessel is staffed by individuals with families – even children – at home. These civilian seafarers, many with no military training, boarded the ships and set on their journey as if it were any other ordinary trip. They didn’t know more than a month later they’d be forced to drop anchor on the front line of a geopolitical confrontation in which they are powerless.
Many of the ships are running out of food and other necessities. Some carry potentially hazardous or decaying cargo, creating a dangerous situation. In a few situations, the seafarers have been injured or killed but can’t be safely evacuated.
The situation is dire. The system isn’t designed to protect these seafarers, even though they are indispensable to keeping the world moving. They are trapped in a “no work, no pay” deadlock, rendered motionless by the instability of the region. This forced idleness has left them financially depleted, unable to send support to their families back home, and emotionally exhausted by the uncertainty of their safety and future.
The crisis in the Strait of Hormuz isn’t just a global trade crisis – it’s become a humanitarian crisis as well.
The Bible Society of the Gulf (BSG) is responding. Along with Christian Mission World, it launched a vital humanitarian intervention for Filipino seafarers currently stranded in the ports of Bahrain.
Christian Mission World is the first responder, providing for the seafarers’ immediate physical needs – primarily groceries and clothing. By distributing such essentials, they provide a tangible reminder that these men are not invisible but are seen and valued.
The Bible Society of the Gulf recognized physical bread could sustain the body, and there was an equally urgent hunger – the need for spiritual endurance. The BSG is uniquely positioned to respond to that need. Through their Bible distribution work, the BSG already provides the Bible in 60 languages around the Arabian Gulf. It made sense that it would now respond to the spiritual needs of these stranded seafarers.
The mission is clear: to provide the Bread of Life – the Bible – to those whose hope has begun to fray.
In the midst of this conflict, this intervention serves as a powerful testament to the Gospel in action. “By meeting them at their point of greatest need,” writes the BSG’s General Secretary Dr. Hrayr Jebejian, “we are ensuring that even when their ships cannot move, their faith can still go forward. We aren’t just delivering supplies; we are delivering the presence of God to the front lines of a humanitarian crisis.”
The Impact
The Arabian Gulf attracts people from all over the world. According to international statistics, at any time there are more than 160 nationalities there. As geopolitical tensions escalate and the shadow of conflict looms over the Strait of Hormuz, maritime workers – the backbone of global trade – are caught in a devastating crossfire.
As these seafarers face isolation and fear, the Bible Society of the Gulf is anchoring their spirits with the Word of God by putting the Bible, in their language, into their hands.
One of these seafarers spoke of the impact, “It was a shock for us to know that the Gulf was under attack. We managed to sail to Bahrain and have been here for a month. Our management has been ignoring our concerns about our safety and lack of provisions. They have left us with no options. But God has answered our prayer. Today, we were given some groceries and a Bible. I am grateful for this outreach.”
Another wrote, “When you are in the middle of the sea and the world feels like it is at war, you feel very small. Receiving this Bible reminds me that the Creator of the seas knows my name. I am no longer sailing alone.”
THE OPPORTUNITy
The Outreach Foundation is seeking gifts to support the Bible Society of the Gulf’s ongoing mission and ministry. All gifts of any size are welcomed to help it continue to print the Bible in more than 60 languages for distribution throughout the Arabian Gulf, including to these stranded Filipino seafarers.
You may make a gift by sending a check to the address below with the partner name BSG in the memo or you can donate on the GIVE page of our website: www.theoutreachfoundation.org.
