Mexico #4 - San Pablo Seminary - Challenges Spark Creativity

On the third and final leg of our trip to México, we left the heights (7,349 feet to be exact) of México City and descended to the steamy tropical lowlands of Yucatán. Our destination was the San Pablo Presbyterian Seminary located in the bustling commercial city of Mérida. We were blessed to spend a day and a half on campus with Rector Amós Cahuich Yam and his faculty and staff. San Pablo Seminary is a long-time partner of The Outreach Foundation and trains theology students from 20 Mexican states, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Chile, and Colombia. A number of their students are fluent in Mayan and will pastor churches that speak that language in Southern Mexico and Guatemala. San Pablo’s degree programs include B.A. in Theology, B.A. in Sacred Music, Diploma in Biblical Counseling, Masters of Divinity, and a Doctor of Ministry.

Mexico #3 - Memorandum of Understanding

For the past two days, The Outreach Team to Mexico consisting of Deena Candler, Mark Mueller, Toby Mueller, Doug Nielson, and Mary Lynne Nielson has been meeting with the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico to learn more about one another and to forge a partnership.

On Monday we met with the President of the denomination and other officers to share our visions and get to know one another. The Presbyterian Church in Mexico has 6,000 churches and almost 3,000,000 members. They are focused on church planting and reaching younger people. They also seek to serve those outside the church.

Mexico #2 - Making New Friends in Villahermosa

Today was a day of making new friends at the Seminario Teológico Presbiteriano del Sureste (Sureste Seminary), a long-time partner of The Outreach Foundation. The seminary is located on a lush tropical campus outside of Villhermosa, the capital of the southern Mexican state of Tabasco.

We were surprised and delighted to have virtually the entire faculty, staff, and student body of the seminary on campus to meet with us. (This was the first time they have gathered in person since the start of COVID.). We were introduced to a majority of the 31 Bachelor of Theology students for which Outreach Foundation partners provide partial scholarships.

Mexico #1 - Friends Old and Friends New

by Doug Nielson, Outreach Foundation trustee

…in my prayers at all times, asking that now at last by God’s will I may succeed in coming to you. For I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you, that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. (Romans 1:11-12)

From October 21 to 29, a team from The Outreach Foundation heads to Mexico to both encourage and be encouraged by existing partners as well as begin a new partnership. COVID, amongst other things, has prevented us from visiting our brothers and sisters in the faith in Mexico and we are excited to actually meet in person those we have only known via e-mail and Zoom. Our “dream team” consists of Executive Director Mark Mueller and his wife, Reverend Toby Mueller, Reverend Deena Candler, Doug Nielson and his wife, Mary Lynne.
