Shattering The Silence
Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
Luke 2:10
Nearly 500 years had passed since Israel’s last prophet Malachi brought news from the LORD. Suddenly, one night an angel shattered the long silence with a vibrant testimony: God has come! This Advent, our partners in the Persian Diaspora show us what it looks like to share this good news today.
Our Iranian brothers and sisters—once Muslims inside Iran—are now some of the boldest witnesses on earth. Despite the threats and severe actions against them for doing so, our partners openly proclaim Jesus’s name and share his good news in Iran. They share the gospel in public parks, a young child reads a children’s Bible to teenagers, individuals place Christian literature in busses, taxis, and doctors’ offices, their songs and teachings about Jesus are on satellite television for millions to hear, teams respond in real time to questions about faith and lead thousands to faith, new Christians are starting house churches among new believers, and family members are becoming Christ followers. The result in Iran is the fastest-growing Christian movement in the world; all glory to God!
Their inspiration to testify has reached all the way to Hoover, Alabama. Our neighborhood is wonderfully diverse: Muslim and Hindu families have moved here from Pakistan and India; others come from China, South Korea, Thailand, South Africa, and across the U.S. Since before Thanksgiving, lights adorn yards and homes, most testifying to hope in Santa, gifts, and Disney characters. My wife Joy and I wondered, what can we do here that’s different?
Inspired by our Persian Diaspora partners, we placed a large nativity scene in our yard, which is at the entrance of our neighborhood, where every car passes. A spotlight rests on Mary, Joseph, and Jesus in a yard without distractions. It’s a testimony we hope raises curiosity, creates wonder, and inspires questions—what is this? A recent conversation with a Hindu man suggested this message opened a door. In the heart of the Bible Belt, in a thoroughly pluralistic neighborhood, the angel’s testimony rings on: Jesus has come—for all people.
Prayer: Lord, this Advent, give me the courage to testify where it is difficult, and the imagination to inspire curiosity about you among those who don’t yet know you. Amen.
