Matanzas Evangelical Theological Seminary Update
Life in Cuba has become increasingly difficult since the January change in fuel sanctions by the U.S. Power outages in Havana last anywhere from four to ten hours per day –nationwide, that number is much higher – averaging 18 hours per day. The effects on the population have been devastating, including food scarcity, hospitals in crisis, and transportation gridlock.
Our partners in Cuba have risen to the challenge and found creative ways to continue their ministries during this economic crisis. Matanzas Evangelical Theological Seminary – the oldest Protestant seminary in Cuba – was forced to move all classes online (via WhatsApp) since fuel shortages meant they could no longer provide transportation for students and professors to and from campus.
Despite these challenges, Rector Rev. Dr. Ary Fernández Albán and the staff at the seminary’s new Havana campus have continued to provide high-quality theological education to more than 200 students across a broad spectrum of programs:
2 – Bachelor’s-level programs (three-year courses in Theology and Religious Studies + plans to add a Youth Ministry program)
2 – Licentiate programs (five-year courses in Theology and Religious Studies)
3 – Master’s programs (Theology, Liturgy, and Religious Studies)
1 – Doctorate of Ministry program
3 – Certificate programs in hospital chaplaincy, diaconal ministry, and Christian education
On June 10, they celebrated the 80th anniversary of the seminary with a joyous graduation. Thirteen students, representing the Presbyterian, Anglican, Baptist, Catholic, and Quaker traditions, received their diplomas across Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate-level programs.
“As part of the Seminary’s 80th anniversary celebrations — and despite the difficult and uncertain conditions Cuban society is currently facing—holding this graduation ceremony confirms the certainty that "Thus far the Lord has helped us! (1 Samuel 7:12)" declared Rector Ary.
The fall semester begins in September. Rector Ary is hopeful residential classes can resume at both the Havana and Matanzas campuses. Please be praying that God would bless the ministry of Matanzas Evangelical Theological Seminary as they train the next generation of church leaders in Cuba to meet the challenges in their country.
