New Church Development in Brazil

From the bustling neighborhoods of world-famous Rio de Janeiro to beach communities on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and villages in the remote Amazonian rainforest, the Independent Presbyterian Church of Brazil (IPIB) is faithfully expanding the kingdom of God - one church plant at a time. Under the capable leadership of Rev. Caio Baptista, Secretary of Evangelism, the IPIB is actively managing 29 church plants in Brazil; along with emerging works in Portugal, England, and the U.S. Below is a brief snapshot of just a few of these remarkable ministries.

Believers on the beach

In the far northeastern region of Brazil, Rev. Oster Graça has planted a vibrant church in the tropical beach community of Iparana. Since 2020, the church has gathered every Sunday afternoon on the beach. A wooden sign tells passersby, “Yes, there is a church here, and you are welcome.” What began as a small gathering has grown into a thriving congregation of 70 believers, with active ministries for men, women, and youth. The church is now constructing its first building so worship can continue during the three‑month rainy season. Their joy is contagious and their witness is bold.

Reaching the lost in Rio

In the southwestern Rio neighborhood of Jacarepaguá, Rev. Heber José Teixeira is shining the light of Christ in a challenging urban environment. Like many parts of Rio, the community faces periodic gang violence and instability. Yet Rev. Heber has persevered with courage and pastoral tenderness.

During the past three years, he has established a safe, welcoming haven for new believers. Today, 25 people gather regularly for worship, discipleship, and fellowship.

Remote, but not without hope

Seventeen hours by boat from the major port city of Manaus lies Coari, a remote Amazonian town surrounded by dense rainforest. Here, church planters Jorge Souza Santos and Helena White Messias Santos are faithfully building a gospel presence. Through personal evangelism, care for the poor and sick, and persistent community engagement, they have gathered a congregation of 49 believers. Their evangelism focus is going strong and includes a regular door-to-door campaign led by their youth group.
