Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo Update June 2025
Dr. Darren Kennedy, and his wife Elisabeth, is one of the three faculty members leaving ETSC.
Every season of change brings both opportunities and challenges. As we give thanks for the faithful and fruitful legacy of the Presbyterian Church (USA)’s World Mission Ministry, we continue to receive challenging news from our partners who have been affected by the discontinuation of the Ministry’s work. One such partner is the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo (ETSC). Since 1863, ETSC has been dedicated to preparing and equipping pastors and church leaders to serve in Egypt and beyond. This change for ETSC means that three faculty members supported by the World Mission Ministry Program will have to conclude their service at ETSC following this year’s graduation. These faculty members have made significant contributions to the life and mission of the seminary through their teaching, leadership, service, and deep personal relationships with students and colleagues alike. Their departure will be deeply felt. The ETSC community grieves the loss of their presence, work, wisdom, and friendship.
Yet in the midst of this sorrow, ETSC also gives thanks—because their legacy continues in the hundreds of students they have taught, mentored, and inspired to serve the church.
Dr. Shin and Dr. Park are also faculty members leaving ETSC.
With fewer hands to share the load, the remaining faculty will have to step up with great courage to carry forward the mission. There is hope that in the years to come, several younger scholars, now pursuing doctoral studies abroad, will return to ETSC and teach. But ETSC would still depend on donor support to fund faculty salaries, especially with the loss of support from World Mission Ministry.
You have faithfully stood with ETSC through prayer, giving, and encouragement, and joined their mission in preparing current and future church leaders, as well as bringing Gospel hope to Arabic-speaking churches in the region. We at The Outreach Foundation invite you to continue walking alongside ETSC in these challenging times.
We are deeply grateful for the PC(USA), for the Mission Co-Worker Program, for every professor who has served with dedication, and for you, our partners in ministry. Thank you for believing in ETSC’s mission and for being part of its story.
