Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo - February 2022 Update

The Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo (ETSC) trains pastors and leaders of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church and various churches in Egypt, encouraging and equipping them to live out God’s call in their lives. It is our pleasure to introduce you to Mofreh Abdelmasieh, a Master of Divinity student at ETSC.

My name is Mofreh Abdelmasieh (pictured on the left). I’m from a village called Dashloot. I grew up in an evangelical family. My father is an elder in our village church, which was founded by American missionaries in 1886. My father loves the church, and I was raised hearing about the important role of the church in people’s lives. When I was young, my father talked to me about becoming a pastor, but I rejected that idea until I went to university. I started serving with a ministry helping students develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ then leading them on the journey of discipleship. I continued for three years until I graduated and began my military service. While serving in the military, I heard God call me to pastoral ministry, so I made the decision to attend ETSC.

Mofreh has a special place in his heart for the faculty at ETSC. The faculty inspire students not only to learn about scripture, theology, and the practice of ministry but also to allow God to shape their lives as servants of the church. They learn to challenge their culture and confront thoughts that are contrary to the life-affirming ways of God. Mofreh says this is the hope for the future of the church in Egypt – to have pastors who can model intellectually thoughtful and spiritually fruitful believers among Christians and Muslims alike. This is the true gift of ETSC to the world. Mofreh’s favorite professor comes from the Netherlands and models both humility and simplicity in life and ministry.

Mofreh continues: The seminary encourages us to get involved in the community and emphasizes the relational aspect of education. I enjoy fellowship with students, professors, and employees. We spend time together watching sports, movies and discussing books. I also like the conversations that we have on personal matters or theological discussions outside the classroom. This deepens our relationships and helps us learn through interaction.

When it comes to his future, Mofreh’s vision is to help the young generation know God’s Word having thoughtfully embraced it. He told us that God’s Word has the power to transform community and culture, and he wants to take this message to his peers. But more than that, he knows God’s Word is for our living as fruitful followers of Christ. In Mofreh, we see a refreshing young leader developing and the future is bright! ETSC is doing wonderful work. Thank you for your support of this gem surrounded by the dusty desert of Cairo.
