Mexico Cistern Ministry and Betsabé Guzman Update
We have shared updates for some time now about the young girl in Xpujil, Mexico, Betsabé, who suffers from brain cancer. We recently received this update from our partner Todd Luke who builds cisterns in Xpujil with Betsabé’s father, and we wanted to share it:
Dear Friends,
We have built 12 cisterns so far this year. Four more will be added in April. But that’s not why I sent this update.
A few weeks back, I asked for prayers of protection and safety. Life in our part of the Yucatan Peninsula remains peaceful and quiet. Thank you for your prayers.
I am also thankful for over 13 months of prayers for Betsabé Guzman. She was diagnosed with glioblastoma (brain cancer) in February of 2025. Her father, Isaias, has been on our cistern building crew for over a decade.
On March 4, Betsabé and her family returned to Castilla Brito for a special thanksgiving worship service to praise God for her life. In Mexico, this type of event is called an “acción de gracias” or “action of thanks.” The entire congregation of The Good Shepherd Church participated in this action of thanks.
After worship, there was a feast with seasoned pork, turkey mole, rice, and tortilla. Church members spent much of the day preparing the meal that fed around two hundred people. As the adults ate, Betsabé ran around laughing and playing hide-n-seek with friends she hadn’t seen for a year. Running, laughing, playing. For most of 2025, she could not even walk.
Betsabé still has a cancerous tumor in her brain. The odds for restored health are not in her favor. The family continues to live five hours from home to be close to the hospital where Betsabé receives chemotherapy and radiation treatment. While away, Isaias works as a food delivery driver using rented vehicles. He returns home every time there are cisterns to build.
Please keep Betsabé and her family in your prayers.
All praise to God.
Todd Luke
