NESSL’s Women Leaders: Salty and Bright

Across Syria and Lebanon, members of the National Evangelical Synod of Syria and Lebanon (NESSL) continue to serve faithfully in the face of great hardship. Years of war, political unrest, and economic collapse have left both countries deeply scarred. Yet, the churches remain strong and resilient, determined to preserve their Christian witness and serve their communities in the name of Christ.

Among these faithful servants are the women of the church, especially the many lay leaders, who play a vital role in the life and ministry of their congregations. They draw strength from knowing that their global Christian family sees them, prays for them, and supports them with love and tangible encouragement.

The Outreach Foundation has been privileged to support NESSL’s efforts to invest in these women leaders. Over the past four years, about 40 women from Protestant churches across Syria and Lebanon have taken part in a leadership development program. They’ve received professional-level training in ministry areas such as conflict resolution, group dynamics, self-care, biblical interpretation, teaching, and public speaking.

Through both in-person gatherings and virtual sessions, these women practiced their skills, encouraged one another, and built a lasting network of support. The experience not only deepened their knowledge but also strengthened their confidence and capacity to lead in their churches and communities. In a region where women often form the backbone of church life, this training has been a crucial investment in the vitality and future of the church. Each of these 40 women recently graduated from the program, celebrating the end of four wonderful years together while celebrating what God has in store for them next!

One inspiring expression of this ministry is a prayer partnership between the women of the Synod church in Damascus and those of National Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC. The Damascus women suggested praying to be “salt and light” (Matthew 5) for their cities and nations—words that beautifully capture the heart of their mission.

Salt enhances flavor and preserves life. Light reveals what is true and good. In the Middle East, where many religious groups focus only on their own communities, NESSL has long modeled the way of Jesus—serving all people, especially the most vulnerable. In doing so, these women leaders shine brightly with the love and character of Christ, offering hope in even the most divided and difficult places.
