Spain Trip Blog July 2025
God is on the Move in Spain and the Arabian Gulf States
Where centuries-old Gothic alleyways wind beside the soaring beauty of the Sagrada Familia, in the heart of Barcelona —a city pulsing with Mediterranean color and creativity —a team from The Outreach Foundation embarked on a six-day visioning trip. We came with prayerful hearts, eager to discern where God is leading as we expand our work in fueling the global mission of Christ. What we experienced in Spain filled us with hope and excitement for what lies ahead.
Besides enjoying the richness of Spanish culture—flamenco rhythms, flavorful cuisine, and the vibrant hum of city life—our time was a journey of discovery. While we set out to understand the landscape of the Protestant church in Spain, its history, its challenges, and its powerful witness today, we were also joined by our partner from Kuwait, the Bible Society in the Gulf (BSG). Representing BSG was its general secretary, Dr. Hrayr Jebejian, who joined us for a couple of days in Barcelona. During our time with Dr. Hrayr, we developed and strengthened our partnership, gained a deeper understanding of BSG’s ministry among the five million Christians residing in Gulf states, and discussed potential future collaborations and trips to the region.
When thinking of the Protestant church in Spain, two images come to mind. The first is a patchwork quilt. Protestantism in Spain is not a single, uniform thread, but rather a collection of diverse denominational strands, including Wesleyan, Reformed, Baptist, Pentecostal, Brethren, and Anglican, which have been stitched together over time. Each brings its own texture and color, but together they offer warmth, beauty, and a shared witness to Christ. The second image is an ember under ash. For centuries, from the Inquisition to Franco’s regime, the Protestant witness in Spain persisted quietly, often hidden, like a glowing ember. Though not always visible, the Holy Spirit preserved and protected it, fanning it into flame in moments of courage, revival, and mission.
During our trip, we were privileged to meet with three ministries that embody this rich tapestry of faith and resilience:
Centro Familiar Cristiano (CFC)
Located just outside Barcelona, CFC is a new partner for us at The Outreach Foundation, whose vibrant faith and community presence deeply inspired us. This church boldly and joyfully proclaims the gospel through generational discipleship, a strong sense of identity, and holistic outreach. Their commitment to bringing Christ’s hope to the city through word and deed is unmistakable.
We shared a joyful meal, visited their social foundation, Cerma, and spent time at the women's residency, a place of healing and empowerment. Stories flowed, prayers rose, and worship united us. Rev. Jack Baca, an Outreach Foundation trustee, preached during our time together, reminding us of our shared Christian identity and mission that binds us as a family across continents.
Arab Ministries in Spain
In the heart of a diasporic Arabic-speaking church, we then met the dedicated staff of Arab Ministries in Spain. Their work among immigrants and refugees, particularly from Muslim backgrounds, is a beautiful testimony to the love of Christ. They offer more than language classes or literacy training; they provide a sense of belonging, safety, and a pathway toward flourishing in a new land.
Iglesia de Cristo – Spanish Reformed Episcopal Church
At Iglesia de Cristo, a historic Protestant church founded in the early 20th century, we met Pastor Sukias Terteryan and Deacon Dani Sánchez, who shared stories of the church’s past during times of persecution, and its ongoing commitment to faithful worship and community engagement. Our time together was a reminder that God's church is both ancient and alive, rooted in tradition and open to the Spirit’s new work.
Spain is a country marked by traditional Catholicism and, increasingly, a secular worldview. Yet, beneath the surface, the Protestant church, though small, remains resilient, faithful, and full of potential. It is multicultural, courageous, and in need of encouragement and global partnership.
We believe God is on the move in Spain. Doors are opening. New friendships are forming. The gospel is being proclaimed in word and deed. And we are honored to be part of this unfolding story.
We invite you to join us.
As we plan future trips to Barcelona and beyond, we are discerning how we can best come alongside our Spanish partner. Will you pray with us? Will you go with us? Will you join in fueling the global mission of Christ? There is room for you in this story.
