About Our Partner

Reformed Presbyterian Church of Guanabacoa

For more than 120 years, the Presbyterian Church in Guanabacoa has given faithful witness to the Good News and developed ministries unique to its context. The church’s pastor, Rev. Yoelkis Sierra, discerned that there were many young children in the neighborhood whose families had no connection to the church. This vision became their “flagship” ministry, a vibrant Monday-Friday preschool program, lovingly and professionally overseen by Yoelkis’s wife, Odilaisy. A program that is the first of its kind in Cuba, it unites a Bible-based curriculum with a government-provided syllabus for 40 two-to-four-year-olds. With its low teacher/student ratio of 1:8 and its reasonable cost of about $10/month, there is a waiting list from this low-income community, most of whom have no Christian background, so the church is eager to welcome them in to share its Good News.

The Impact

With God’s blessing, partners have stepped up to help identify and train teachers, help with school supplies, provide medical assistance, and even provide nutritional meals several times a week.
