Rebuilding Hope among Refugees in Africa

The Outreach Foundation works closely with the Pastoral and Outreach Ministries Council of the Synod of the Nile in Egypt (POMC). Rev. Manassa Nesem serves as the Executive Manager of POMC and shared the following information about how refugees in Sudan are being aided by brothers and sisters in Egypt:

Political conflicts erupted over the reigns of power in northern Sudan between two leaders of the Sudanese army, which led to an increase in the frequency of skirmishes and resulted in a fierce internal war. These conflicts started on April 15 and continue. The repercussions of these events have created problems in all aspects of life in northern Sudan. As a result, there is a lack of food, water, and means of communication; moreover, several reports have included a large number of civilian deaths.

Consequently, Sudanese citizens and some foreigners who live there were forced to flee to Egypt, the country closest to the northern Sudanese border. A huge number of people come to Egypt every day at the Egyptian border after a three-day march. The borders are not prepared to receive such a large number, so it takes more than 12 hours to complete entry procedures. When finished, the refugees must travel four hours by bus to reach the nearest Egyptian city, Aswan. The displaced people spend all these days in the open without water, food, or shelter. Since Egypt has no refugee camps, it allows them to settle within its cities among its citizens.

Accordingly, the POMC decided to take urgent measures to intervene in this crisis, and to do the following:

  • provide food and supplies for the displaced at the borders, especially including children and infants

  • provide transportation from the border to Aswan

  • help refugees located in the conference halls provided by the Evangelical Church in Aswan or Christian institutions

  • help Sudanese settle in Aswan because of the nominal living prices compared to the rest of the governorates, especially Cairo.

  • send a support team to follow up, pray with them personally, and facilitate everything they need as much as possible

The total cost for this will be about $55,000, and the council does not have a sufficient budget to meet this need.

Please pray for victims of the conflict, the displaced as well as those helping them in Egypt.
