Urgent Medical Appeal in Ukraine

An Urgent Medical Appeal from the Main Blood Bank for the Kirovohrad Region

Earlier today, we received an urgent appeal from the hospital our partners in Lviv are working with to provide medical assistance to victims of the war. Here is some background information pertinent to their request:

The city of Kropyvnytskyy is accommodating many wounded people who are fleeing from the southern region of Ukraine, specifically Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. This region has become a center for Russian attacks with constant bombing for the past several days. The number of wounded people is increasing. State funding that had previously been available for these southern regions has now been exhausted.

The central blood transfusion center for these southern regions is responding to medical needs in various ways, including maintaining a blood bank. Blood is an essential resource for saving lives. The center has been using equipment that dates from the mid-70s to provide the needed supplies of blood. However, over the past few weeks, the machine has struggled. The recent uptick in wounded has burdened the equipment beyond its capacity, and it has begun to fail.

The medical director of the blood center sent us the following request, which was translated by Outreach partner Father Oleh from the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church:

We are grateful for your concern for the fate of the blood service in Ukraine and our region. Thank you very much for your partnership and understanding of the necessity of this equipment for our blood center. More than 80 blood donors have been accepted today and the need looks only to increase greatly in the coming days and weeks. Yes, we will win! Grateful for your consideration.

The specific need is for a Sigma blood centrifuge and irradiator at a cost of approximately $55,000.
