Tumaini Children's Ministry - June 2020 Update

Nyeri, Kenya

A mission effort of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) Riamukurwe parish, the Tumaini Children’s Ministry comprises the Tumaini and Huruma homes for vulnerable children. Before the pandemic, more than 100 children lived and attended school at Tumaini. Huruma, a nearby facility that includes a number of disabled children, housed 50 children. The Tumaini ministry also includes a vocational training program, which serves post-secondary students and people from the community.

On March 15th, the Kenyan government announced the closure of all schools and learning institutions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tumaini students and residents were sent home to stay with their parents or guardians. Tumaini leadership has been visiting the children in their homes and allowing very needy cases to return. The eighth-grade students have also been allowed to come back to continue studying for their upcoming exams. As of June 9th, there are 49 children back at Tumaini. Everyone is safe and healthy. They are practicing handwashing and improving their hygiene skills to prevent COVID-19 infections. Overall, Nyeri County has only reported 2 cases of the virus to date, but the economic impact on the community has been severe. The PCEA is supporting local families and Tumaini center with regular food donations. The Kenyan government recently announced that schools will be allowed to reopen on September 1, 2020.

We remain grateful for your partnership and prayers for Tumaini Children’s Ministry.
