University Student Ministry - June 2015 Update

Ethiopia

Dear Friends,

Leadership training

The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) University Student Ministry (USM) was started in the 1960s. The early leaders of EECMY were very passionate about their ministry and asked Emperor Hailesilase to allow them to build a building to accommodate it close to Addis Ababa University. They finally succeeded. Church leaders assigned students leadership responsibilities and allocated an appropriate budget for the work. This has laid a solid foundation for the ministry.

EECMY-USM currently serves more than 67,000 students from 70 campuses including the Afan Oromo program. USM is also active in 21 preparatory schools (high schools) across the country. Despite the vast scope of the work, the ministry employs only one full-time worker.
Leaders envision their students as disciples of Christ and good citizens for a lifetime. Nurturing and equipping students to ensure growth in faith, preparing students to be good citizens, and expecting students to be strong and visionary with high values are the objectives of the ministry. Some of the activities provided by USM in order to meet these objectives include seminars on leadership development, Christian growth conferences, distribution of Bible study guides, training, campus meetings, Christian education activities, and seminars on timely issues by different experts.

As a result of this ministry, many leaders have been produced, new students have come to Christ, unreached people groups have heard the Good News of Jesus Christ and joined the church, congregations have received assistance from  graduates, and many churches have been planted in places unreached by the church. New souls join the church every year.
EECMY-USM’s vision for the future is to promote and sustain this expanding ministry. Establishing the EECMY-USM National Graduates Council is one of the goals. The rationale is that the EECMY has been working with university students for a long time but does not provide any activities after graduation to keep them close to the church and USM. Because of this, the church does not know how many of them have maintained their church affiliation, left the church or changed denominations. A National Graduates Council would be a strong partner and liaison between the EECMY-USM and graduates of the program. We request your prayers to fulfill this vision.

We are grateful for your partnership in our Lord’s work.

For further success, prayers are paramount!

Fekadu Begna Genala, USM National Coordinator
