Kenya #1: PCEA headquarters

by Malia Lewis, for the team

The good Lord brought us safely to Nairobi where we were lovingly greeted at the Milele Nairobi by Lauren Scharstein, deputy director of mission for the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA). The Milele Hotel is nestled among the beautiful, flowering greenery on the grounds of the PCEA headquarters, where we toured the executive offices and met the gracious staff. As we learned about the various projects, it became clear the love and gracious giving through the hands of God’s servants is growing in East Africa!

The PCEA serves Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda and is seeking new growth alongside churches in Burundi, Rwanda, and Congo. Projects continue to include church planting with an emphasis on water supply in rural areas, to aid in water collection for cooking and cleaning. The church has financed the digging of 8 new boreholes this year and hopes to purchase its own drilling machine to facilitate new water opportunities.

Another important area of discussion was the continued education aimed at the prevention of female genital mutilation and child marriage. Girls as young as 8 years old have been sold during times of hardship in exchange for cattle and resources to provide sustenance for the greater family. A youth camp was held to educate children about their rights, and many have come forward running away from childhood marriage. Mama Ester’s classroom is a new facility currently housing 150 students who have successfully fled this way of life. As education continues, older members of these families are seeing the value of preserving and educating young girls.

PCEA Secretary-General Peter Kaniah graciously shared the 128-year history of the PCEA, citing the mission hospitals, clinics, and schools as evidence of the loving growth of God’s message of faith, hope, and love in East Africa. Interestingly, the Presbyterian membership in the region is 4.5 million, as compared to 2.1 million in the United States. It is clear we have much to learn from these wonderful Christians!

As we prepare for our day tomorrow with the children of the Tumaini Children’s home, our hearts are filled with joy. This home of God houses over 150 children, giving them opportunities to experience God, love, and family in a nurturing environment. It is our great hope and prayer the good Lord guides us as we share his love with the children.
