MISSIONAL CHURCH - Has the vision shaped our reality?
In 1998 a group of missiologists and church leaders, including our keynote speaker Darrell Guder, published “Missional Church: A Vision for the Sending of the Church in North America.” They called for a radical reappraisal of our context and a redefinition of the purpose of the church. Today, the word “missional” finds its way easily into church conversations, so easily that it brings to mind Stephen Neill’s observation that if everything is mission, nothing is mission.
Join with other mission leaders to explore the impact of the missional church vision on our congregations. Where is that vision today? How can we move beyond the rhetoric to a new reality? Can missional churches that focus on the neighborhood still be missionary for the world? Are we still clinging to the vestiges of Christendom and protecting our pet reductions of the Gospel? Are our denominational and congregational structures getting in the way? What can we learn about the church’s missional purpose from the church in the Majority world?
We will be led in our conversation by plenary speakers (click their names to learn more):
Dr. Darrell Guder, recently retired Professor of Missional and Ecumenical Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary
Dr. Timothy Carriker, missionary serving with the Independent Presbyterian Church of Brazil, a professor and missiological consultant doing research and producing resource materials on mission
