Namumu Orphanage Center (NOC) is a community-based program in Siavonga, Zambia with a capacity for 80 children. Namumu Orphanage’s primary mission is to ensure care and love for underprivileged orphans and vulnerable children. The center wants to offer them every chance for a normal childhood and to become responsible and independent adults.
Most children coming to Namumu have had difficult lives as a result of poverty, death of parents due to HIV/AIDS, lack of love, or emotional stress. The center has become a healing place for them. Namumu provides elementary and high school education to all residents. Over 300 children, including those in residence, have access to elementary education at a community school started with the center’s involvement and now turned over to the community to benefit from government resources available to communities. Four bright children graduated from high school in the past year joining other Namumu alumni. Recent graduates are waiting for university admission in January 2016. Over 15 children are in the processes of graduating. A clinic to care for the children’s health and the community is in place on campus and operated by a well-skilled nurse recently appointed through a partnership with a U.S. organization called “Spread Health.”
Through income-generating activities including fishing, gardening, and poultry with over 800 layers, Namumu’s goal is to generate supplemental income for program operations and feeding the children. These activities will also help develop skills and create employment, reducing poverty. Namumu is getting strong support from members of the community who purchase fish, eggs, and goats as well as donate other items to Namumu.
Funds are needed for food, general operation of the orphanage, educational support for both the elementary and high school, as well as repair and maintenance of existing facilities at the center.
Namumu is working hard to achieve their goal to move these children “from desperation to hope,” and their theme verse is James 1:27a:
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress…
Minimum Goal for 2016
$60,000 for operations and $10,000 for housing repairs, equipment, and skills training
