STREET CHILDREN'S MINISTRY IN NYERI
KENYA
This ministry grew out of the friendship between the Rev. Dr. Edward R. Danks, a retired Presbyterian minister from Darien, Connecticut, and the Rev. Bernard Muindi, a past moderator of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa and recently retired pastor of the Riamukurwe Parish.
A mission effort of the local parish, the Nyeri center feeds over 200 destitute children and some of their family members. A dormitory that will ultimately house 300 orphaned children was dedicated in 2003. Twenty-eight more children moved into it this year. Now, there are nearly 200 children in the Tumaini dormitory ranging in age from five to 19 years, and all the children are attending school.
About eight post-secondary students are preparing to go on to university or vocational training programs. Their success is a great inspiration for the younger children. As planned, the children have begun vocational training classes in computer training and sewing, about 60 students in each program.
Equipment such as sewing machines, tools, and computers, is needed for the training program. Funds are also needed to continue the ministry of feeding, clothing and educating the street children of Nyeri.
Minimum goal: $50,000 - Food, clothing, education, medical expenses and vocational training
