DICK AND BIBBY SWAYZE
South America (focus on Brazil)
Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Dick Swayze graduated from Wheaton College with a BA in philosophy and earned his divinity degree at Columbia Theological Seminary.
He was the founding pastor of John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Shreveport, Louisiana, before being commissioned as missionary to Brazil, where he served from 1962-76. The major part of his ministry was located in the Federal District, where he organized five churches. He also served as pastor of the International English-speaking Union Church in Brasilia for seven years. Upon return to this country, Dick served as pastor of congregations in Newnan, Georgia, McComb, Mississippi and Gulfport, Mississippi, his final installed pastorate.
Since his retirement in 2000, Dick has had several interims and now experiences the joy of serving as a mission consultant for The Outreach Foundation. In this role, Dick is speaking in U.S. churches, building relationships with mission personnel in Brazil and with partner church leaders in the Independent Presbyterian Church of Brazil (IPB), and leading trips to Brazil to see projects supported though The Outreach Foundation.
Dick writes after two trips to Northeast Brazil: "It is truly amazing to see what God is doing through the Missionary Training Center in Natal. They are training Brazilian missionaries who then go to Northeast Brazil to plant congregations."
Bibby Swayze is the daughter of the manse, and lived most of her formative years in Atlanta, Georgia. She is a graduate of Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi, with a BA in elementary education. She enjoyed a short teaching career and for over 40 years has been privileged to assist in Dick’s ministry both abroad and at home. Bibby retired from the Mississippi Employment Security Commission several years ago, where she worked as an interviewer.
